Responsible reporting

Words matter

How mental health and suicide are reported can reduce stigma and save lives. We ask all media covering the summit to follow international guidance.

  • Use person-first language: “a person living with depression”, not “a depressive”.
  • Avoid describing suicide methods or locations, and avoid sensational headlines.
  • Include information on where to find help, such as Rwanda’s toll-free line 114.
  • Feature stories of recovery and hope, and the voices of people with lived experience.
